Your new oral piercing has been performed in a sterile environment using high quality, sterile equipment and using a disposable, single use needle. It is now up to you to look after it to ensure it remains clean. Providing you follow our oral piercing aftercare guidelines you should experience little or no problems.
However, if you ever experience any issues or have any questions please feel free to return to store to see one of our piercers.
You can download your Oral Piercing Aftercare Guide here.
The jewellery in your new lip or tongue piercing will probably look or feel too big, this is to accommodate the swelling you will almost certainly experience. Swelling can be uncomfortable but it will slowly decrease over time, which usually takes between 2 to 4 weeks. After 2 weeks we recommend you return to the store so a piercer can assess you for a possible jewellery change.
To clean your new piercing you can either use:
* Salt water (a teaspoon of natural salt in a cup of pre-boiled water)
* Diluted Mouthwash (a 50/50 mix of anti-septic mouthwash and pre-boiled water)
Either way we recommend that you rinse the inside of your mouth out at least twice a day for 4 to 6 weeks. If you are a smoker you will also need to rinse after every cigarette too.
For external areas (the outside of your lip for example) the above mentioned salt water solution must be used twice a day. Tea tree oil (available in store) may also be used as a cleaning aid for the external areas, simply apply to the skin 5 minutes prior to cleaning and wash off fully using the salt water.
Do not twist or move your jewellery unnecessarily and never remove the jewellery before it is due to be changed. Also for external areas, keep any beauty products (makeup, fake tan etc) away from the area until it is fully healed.
As with any new piercing a local area of redness and a small amount of white/yellowish discharge are both healthy and completely normal.
Again, if you are ever concerned or have any questions please come back in to store for a chat. If you are unable to return to store for any reason please only consult a medical professional or visit our FAQ where we have extensive piercing information available for you to view.
