A nose stud is specifically designed for use in a nostril piercing. This unique piece of piercing jewellery is available in a variety of types. With nose piercings at the height of popularity, changing your nose stud piercing jewellery can help your piercing to standout. Make sure your piercing is fully healed before changing the jewellery.

Nose Stud Types

There are many types of nose stud that can be worn in a nostril piercing. Some of the nose piercing studs are designed only to be used in nose piercings while others can be used in a range of different piercings:
  • Nose Bone Stud: A straight piercing stud with a small ball on the end to hold the jewellery in place.
  • Nose Stud Pin: A straight piercing stud that is the same thickness along the whole bar.
  • Nostril Screw Stud: A straight stud with a semi-circular end that is placed at a right angle to the straight pin.
  • L-Shaped Pin Stud: As the name suggests, this nose stud is in an L shape to help hold it in place.
  • Nose Ring: Usually an incomplete circle with small balls to the end, to hold it in place. Similarly, you can use a seamless ring which does not have small balls on the ends.
  • CBR/BCR: The Captive Bead Ring or Ball Closure Ring is used in many types of piercing. It can be placed in a nose piercing and is held together by a ball with two small indents for placing onto the ring.
  • Circular Barbell: A horseshoe shaped barbell with a stud at both ends. This piercing jewellery is used in many types of piercing include nose piercings.
  • Hinged Segment Ring: A hinged segment ring features a section of hoop that can be moved and re-fastened in order to insert the jewellery. Segment rings function in a similar way but can require pliers to open and close.
  • Retainer Stud: A clear nose stud that is used for hiding or covering up your piercing.

What type of nose stud is best?

Many say that the best type of nose stud is the L-shaped nose stud. This is because the shape of the bar allows the nose stud to sit snugly inside your nostril for the best fit. The L-shape stops it from falling out as easily as some other styles. It is up to your personal preference which type of nose stud is best for you. Many people enjoy wearing a classic pin or bone shaped nose stud while a nose ring is becoming increasingly popular and fashionable.

How do I take my nose stud out?

To take out a pin or bone nose stud simply gently pull the bar from the outside of your nostril. If you have a labret nose stud you will need to unscrew the ball or gem that is on the outside of your nostril. To make this easier you can hold the flat back of the labret bar that is inside your nostril. Once the ball is removed you can gently pull the bar back through the inside of your nose to take out your nose stud.

If you are removing a nose ring stud there are several ways this can be taken out. If you are wearing a BCR or CBR then you will need to gently twist the ring apart to release the ball. You can then work the ring through your nose piercing to remove it. Seamless rings can, similarly, be worked through the piercing hole.

For hinged segment rings, open the hinged section of your nose ring and work it through your nose piercing, very gently. Some segment rings will require jewellery pliers to take out the segment and then remove the nose ring but it is possible to gently pull apart the segment nose ring in order to release the jewellery.

What is the easiest nose stud to put in?

Pin or bone nose studs are the easiest to insert. To put them in you simply need to push the nose stud through the nostril piercing. Nose bones have a small ball on the end to keep them secure.

If you prefer nose ring studs then the easiest type of nose ring to put in is the BCR. This type of nose ring features a small ball that holds the rings in place. BCR or CBR nose rings often have a small gem or different colour for the ball to add to the look of your nose piercing.

Do straight nose studs fall out easily?

Nose bones or nose pins do have the potential to fall out easily. While they are the easiest to insert this also means they are the least secure once they are in your nostril piercing. The straight bar of the nose stud can sometimes get pushed out of the nose piercing and completely fall out. However, nose bones do have a small ball on the end of the pin to help keep them in place.

Why does my nose stud pop out?

The nose stud may appear to pop out once the nose piercing has healed. This is because you are likely to be pierced with a longer nose stud to allow for initial swelling. Once the swelling of the nostril has reduced the bar of the nose stud may be too long. Your piercer will usually ask you to return in order to have a shorter nose stud put in.

If your nose stud continues to pop out you may want to try a different style of nose jewellery. The L-Shaped nose stud is designed to sit snugly against your nostril. The L shape holds it in place. Alternatively, you could try a labret stud. This has a flat base that sits on the inside of the nose to hold it in place unlike a straight nose pin or nose bone.

Can you repierce the same nose hole?

It is sometimes possible to repierce the same nose hole but ultimately the piercing placement will be based on the advice and knowledge of your piercer. If you have scar tissue caused by the original nose piercing you may not be able to repierce the same hole. If the piercing has not been closed up for very long it can be very easy for your piercer to re-open the same nose hole as the inside may not have completely healed. It is important to visit your piercer to re-open a closed hole as trying to do it yourself can cause damage and introduce infection.

Nose stud jewelry has one of the smallest gauges of any piercing jewellery. Nose stud sizes usually range from a 24 gauge to a 16 gauge which is 0.6mm – 1.2mm in thickness. Many people opt for a gauge somewhere in between, such as an 18g nose stud but you will be able to discuss this with your piercer.

Whatever style of nose jewelry you choose, make sure to browse for a design and material that is comfortable for you. With so many different types of nose stud to choose from, you are sure to have plenty of fun customising your nose piercing.
