What is a lip stud?

A lip stud usually describes a piercing that is placed on or around the lips. Most lip stud piercing types are placed around the lips using a labret piercing stud. Some of the most popular placements include Monroe, Madonna, and Angel Bites. There are a few types of lip piercing that are placed directly through the lip. These include Jestrum, Vertical Labret, and Ashley.

How do you take out a lip stud?

In order to remove a lip stud, firmly hold the flat disc at the back of the labret stud with one hand while gently twisting the ball on the other end to unscrew the lip piercing stud. Take care when removing your lip stud not to lose the pieces of jewellery. Remove the labret stud by gently pulling the bar, by the flat disc, through the piercing hole.

What is the piercing on the lip called?

There are many types of lip piercing. The lip piercing that is placed on the lip is called an Ashley piercing. This is pierced with a labret piercing stud through the centre of the bottom lip. Other piercings that are placed directly on the lip include Jestrum and Vertical Labret. These piercings are performed with a curved barbell.

How much is a lip ring?

The price of a lip ring will vary depending on the material and style you choose. Prices start from £2.99 so as you can see lip rings don’t have to cost much. The cost of a lip ring can be more expensive if you choose a material such as titanium but surgical steel lip rings are usually very cheap. Our Coloured Titanium hoops start from £3. Surgical steel piercing jewellery is best used in fully healed piercings whereas titanium jewellery is perfect for healing piercings.

What is the purpose of a lip ring?

While there are historical reasons that certain cultures pierce lips, nowadays people like to pierce their lips as a fashion statement. A lip ring hoop is a popular accessory among fans of Gothic and punk fashion styles. With so many different lip piercings to choose from and a range of lip piercing ring styles to try, this is one of the most customisable piercings available.

How long does it take for a lip ring to heal?

A lip ring piercing can take up to 6 months to heal. The average healing time for a lip piercing is 3 to 6 months. The lip piercing has one of the longest healing processes of any piercing. This is because your lip hoop is partly in your mouth. When you eat and talk your lip ring will move meaning that it will take longer to heal than a piercing that is placed in an area that experiences little movement. Another factor to consider is that the lip piercing is placed in your mouth which means keeping your piercing clean is vital for successful healing.

What size is a lip ring?

The size of a lip ring is usually 16 Gauge or 14 Gauge. This equals 1.2mm to 1.6mm in thickness. The circumference of the lip ring will vary. You may find that a certain size of lip ring is more comfortable for you depending on your lip size and the placement of your piercing. If you are intending to buy lip rings always make sure the gauge matches your current piercing jewellery to avoid damaging your piercing and for a comfortable fit. If you aren’t sure what size your lip ring is then we recommend asking your piercer for help. Once you know the size, you can enjoy picking out some new lip piercing jewellery.

Do lip rings ruin your teeth?

Lip rings can potentially ruin your teeth if you don’t have the correct fit of piercing jewellery. If the lip ring rubs against your gums or teeth this can cause the gums to recede or damage to the tooth enamel. Make sure your lip ring fits snugly to your lip without being too tight. This will minimise movement and reduce the chance of your lip piercing rubbing against your teeth or gums.

Lip studs are an easy piece of piercing jewellery to wear. The flat back of a labret means that you can enjoy maximum comfort while changing the add on ball of your piercing bar for a new look. Lip studs are easy to change but healing a lip piercing requires plenty of patience and commitment to heal successfully. Picking Out Lip Studs & Rings

It is important to choose the right size and material for your piercing jewellery as your body may react differently to different materials. Getting the right size of labret stud is important for the health of your piercing.

Size: Lip studs and rings are measured by the length and gauge. The first number is the gauge (displayed in mm) and the second is the length or diameter e.g. 1.2 x 8mm. To measure the length of a lip stud, measure from one end of the bar to the other, without the add on balls.
Material: Choosing a high quality material such as titanium will provide you with a hypoallergenic material that is perfect for everyday use. Surgical steel is also a good choice for healed piercings as it is durable.

Most lip studs are internally threaded which means the screw is at the end of the add on ball and the hole is at the end of the bar.

Inserting/Removing Lip Studs

Before handling your piercing, always make sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap.

Changing a lip stud is a simple process that can be done at home but if you would like help, especially the first time, then it is best to visit a piercer.

It is important to be patient and not attempt to change your piercing jewellery before the wound is fully healed as this can cause complications. However, once it has healed you can start exploring your options. Your piercer will usually use a lip stud to perform the piercing which can then be changed to a lip ring once the piercing has healed.

To remove your lip stud, simply unscrew the ball on the end of the bar. You will then be able to remove the bar from your piercing and replace it with a new one. Gently move the labret stud through your piercing until you reach the end of the bar. If you find it hard to remove the ball then jewellery pliers can help.

When inserting your new labret stud make sure to push the bar gently through the piercing hole and keep going until it is in a suitable position. Always make sure to screw the ball tightly on the end.
