As you may have expected, we see a major increase in people searching for and requesting belly button piercings, or navel piercings if you’re feeling fancy. With the majority of people having more skin exposed in the summer - to try and combat the heat and humidity, or because of your swimming costume - it seems natural to consider getting a belly piercing. This piercing is fun and youthful, and you can get some beautiful belly piercing jewellery to pair it with. The summer is the perfect time to show off your belly button piercing, but is it the best time to get it pierced?
If you’ve done any sort of research on belly piercings, you’ll know that they are one of the piercings that can take the most time to heal (6 to 9 months, and in some cases even longer). Due to their placement, these piercings can easily be caught or snagged, prolonging the healing process and causing irritation. It is also recommended that you don’t swim with new piercings, as bacteria in the water can lead to infections. If you love to swim, keep in mind that it’ll be difficult to take a dip if you can’t get your stomach wet! Sweat can also irritate the piercing site, once again prolonging the already lengthy healing period.
However, one benefit of piercing your belly button in the summer is that the lighter and looser clothing is less likely to snag or irritate the piercing as it heals. Furthermore, this gorgeous piercing really does deserve to be in the spotlight. Instead of getting pierced in June or July, we recommend getting pierced in early autumn to allow your piercing plenty of time to heal. In late September and early October, we begin to wear more layers, which can irritate your piercing; however, if you keep them loose, that should help prevent friction. Sweat, dirty water, or excessive movement is also likely to be less of a potential issue for many in autumn and winter compared to summer.
If all goes well, you can show off your piercing once again in the summertime, fully healed and ready to be the perfect built-in accessory. These piercings take the most amount of time to heal due to the lack of blood flow around the area, so even though it may look healed on the outside, you could interrupt or damage the healing process on the inside if you take your piercing jewellery out too soon, or take risks such as swimming or not keeping the site clean. Concerns like keeping it clear of sweat are also easier to manage in a cooler climate.
However, if your belly button piercing is already fully healed, then take advantage of the hot and sunny season to show off your stylish belly bar or belly ring! When you have a piercing hidden under clothes for half of the year, you should take advantage of the warmer months to flaunt it! We have a massive range of navel piercing jewellery, with gorgeous and whimsical charms attached to navel bars, and plenty of options available in our 3 for 2 mix and match multibuy sale. From segment rings and BCR rings, we have plenty of bejewelled options available.
Nose piercings are always a popular choice, adding a focal point to the centre of your face. This summer, we expect to see many small and dainty studs, but we still love the look of chunky and eye-catching septum rings. Most people enjoy switching to a ring once the piercing is healed (studs are recommended for the initial piercing and healing period as they are less likely to catch on anything); however, we have some beautiful small nose studs available at Blue Banana. These small piercings instantly add an effortless yet edgy vibe to your look.
For an even more alternative look, why not go for a double nostril piercing? This could be a paired piercing with symmetrical placement on both nostrils. Try a ring on one side and a stud on the other once the piercings have healed for a unique look. Or, stack both of your nose piercings onto one side for a double nostril piercing, because why have one when you can have two? Again, we love these piercings with a mix and match collection of jewellery for some contrast.
It’s important to leave your piercing alone as it heals; try your best not to touch, fidget with, or twist the piercing during the healing period, as this can lead to irritation, infection, and other issues. Twisting the piercing can disrupt the healing going on inside the body. You should gently clean your new piercing twice a day, maximum with a saline solution, always washing your hands first. Try to avoid bumping the piercing as much as possible when cleaning it, and don’t overclean.
In summer, be careful to put sun cream around, but not on the piercing site. Foreign liquids building up around the piercing is a recipe for disaster, which is why it is also recommended to avoid makeup around the area and be careful when washing your face or applying skincare. Once again, you should also avoid swimming with a new piercing; as the piercing is on your face, going for a paddle or sticking your feet in the pool on a hot day is much less risky than with a belly piercing.
Of course, stacked ear piercings are always great in summer, as you can really show them off with a range of updos and hairstyles that pull your hair away from your face and neck. With so many placement options available for ear piercings, you can tailor these piercings to suit your features and style. From maximalist styles that cover the ear to dainty and smaller jewellery alongside precise placements, individualise your piercing stack with some fresh jewellery this summer.
We’ve been seeing plenty of floating helix piercings cross our feed recently, and we love every single one! Depending on your anatomy, you can hide the actual point of the piercing site and leave the jewellery appearing to be unanchored. We love this whimsical and delicate look, best highlighted with a labret and chains attached to hang down. This helix piercing, paired with some gorgeous jewellery, is certainly an eye-catcher. We’ve also seen quite a few flat floating piercings, particularly with rings, which appear as though they’ve simply been stuck to the skin rather than pierced through!
Again, for proper healing, we recommend keeping any new piercings out of bodies of water such as pools, lakes or the ocean. Try to avoid sleeping on the same side as a new ear piercing, as the pressure can irritate the site. As with all piercings, once again, try to prevent anything catching or snagging on the piercing as it heals, and clean twice daily with saline solution.
Ear piercings are the least problematic piercing on this list to get in the summer, but if you often wear hats or swim, once again, you may want to consider placement and if it’s most suitable for you.
Whether you’re just starting your collection or you feel like you’re starting to run out of room, ear stacks are always ideal in the summer. From celestial-themed, dainty jewellery to maximalist styles with plenty of charms, hoops and unique pieces, we love to see everyone embracing their individuality.
