Nostril:
The most common nose piercing is, of course, the nostril. You can create stacks with higher nostril piercings, too, or secondary piercings with placements further forward. Applicable to the left or right side, if you want to fix some asymmetry in your face or draw attention to a particular side, then a nostril piercing can be that small and delicate but eye-catching touch.
It takes approximately 4 months for a nostril piercing to heal depending on the individual, however, the mistake most people make is changing their jewellery too soon. We understand that when you want to achieve a certain look, it can be difficult to wait patiently! However, it is recommended to wait until a few weeks after your healing journey has been completed to change out your jewellery to prevent any complications.
Messing with the piercing site, such as twisting or changing out the jewellery may lead to infections or result in more scarring, so it is important to leave the piercing alone, apart from when cleaning it twice a day.
For double the fun, get a symmetrical look with a nostril piercing on both the left and right sides of your face! These symmetrical nose piercings mean that you can have fun with connecting chains or mirroring each side with identical piercings. Or, swap one out for a hoop and keep one with a stud for an alternative asymmetrical look. Double nostril piercings also mean you don’t have to worry about which side to pierce!
Septum:
The next most common type of nose piercing is the septum; this piercing can take around 4-8 months to completely heal. During the initial period after piercing, the area can be sensitive and tender to the touch, so you may feel some pain during the healing process.
These fun piercings are great for adding a bit of bling to the centre of your face; although your elder relatives’ favourite comment may be about you looking like a bull, these versatile piercings have many different jewellery options, not just rings. If necessary, you can also flip septum piercings upwards so that they don’t show in professional or conservative settings once it is fully healed. This is one of the few facial piercing options where you can decide whether you want it on display or not without having to remove the piercing.
Septum piercings have been around for a long time, and whilst today they typically just represent a fun spirit and individuality, they have been used in the past by cultures all over the world, ranging across all the continents from North America to South America, multiple countries in Oceania, Africa, and South Asia for various meanings. In the 70s, they gained popularity in the Western World through punk and hippie subcultures, but nearly everyone now enjoys them.
Bridge:
A nose bridge piercing offers a truly unique look, normally a horizontal bar between the eyes. This type of piercing has been rising in popularity recently, however, many are still put off enough by the idea of such a piercing for them to remain uncommon and individual. They create a beautiful flow across the face and really highlight the eyes. If you want an even more unusual look, these piercings can also be done vertically.
Although these piercings may look like they hurt, they are said to rate lowly on a pain scale of 1-10 for most people. Despite looking like a deep piercing it only passes through the skin, massively reducing the pain level.
These types of piercings are considered surface piercings, as most people don’t have a lot of skin in that area of their face, and the risk of rejection and migration is higher with this kind of piercing. This type of piercing can take from 3-4 months to heal, and if you feel that your piercing is starting to reject or migrate, make sure to talk to your piercer.
If you wear glasses, you may also want to consider how they sit on your face before getting a bridge piercing! We recommend bringing your frames to your appointment so your piercer can advise you on the placement.
