What is the difference between check and tartan?

In contrast, check clothing tends to only consist of two colours creating a similar effect to tartan dress but without the more intricate details. A check pattern consists of squares in two colours that vary in shade which are made up from crossing over horizontal lines. The difference in tartan is that there are more colours and the lines vary in thickness, creating a colourful criss-cross pattern.

Check is often thought of as belonging to a different family of patterns such as gingham and houndstooth due to its uniform design.
