Is acrylic good for piercings?

As it is flexible plastic, acrylic jewellery will reduce the pressure on the piercing, and very few people ever report having an allergic reaction to this material.

Some people prefer to wear acrylic piercing jewellery in their healed tongue and lip piercings. This is because acrylic is far less likely to cause damage to the teeth. When metal jewellery rubs against a tooth it can wear away the enamel, plus accidentally knocking your teeth with your piercing jewellery can cause chipping. Acrylic is softer and more flexible so even if it is pushed against a tooth it is more likely to simply bend than cause damage.

Another benefit of choosing acrylic jewellery for your healed piercings is that it is usually cheaper than a metal piece of jewellery. This cheap plastic is kind to skin and kind to your bank balance too.

Is acrylic bad for piercings?

While acrylic is a useful piercing material it is not a metal which means acrylic jewellery doesn’t have the ability to withstand hot temperatures. It cannot be sterilised in the same way as titanium or other metal piercings. This is why it is not advisable to wear acrylic in a healing piercing unless advised to do so by your piercer.
