Planning a new, bright, and vibrant hair color? You will likely need to consider bleaching your hair in preparation. The Manic Panic Flash Lightning® Hair Bleaching Kits are a popular option for easy at-home hair dyeing amongst the Manic Panic Dye Hards and many others. Available in two different developer strengths, the 30 and 40 volume bleach kits provide options and choice for customers so that they can choose the most appropriate kit for their requirements.

The Manic Panic hair bleaching kits contain everything you need to lift your hair color a minimum of 3 levels. Instructions are included in each kit to provide the necessary directions for use, but for even more information, you can visit our Home Hair Dyeing FAQs. In your Manic Panic bleach kit, you will find:
  • Bleaching Powder
  • Crème Developer
  • Tint Brush
  • Mixing Tray
  • Plastic Cap
  • Plastic Gloves

Why do you need to bleach hair?

You don’t always need to bleach your hair when applying hair dye. If you are naturally very light and your color is consistent throughout, you might find that you can apply your chosen color directly onto your natural tone, and the color will visibly show. You might also be looking for a very subtle change to your naturally dark hair, in which case, more pigmented dyes could provide a slight color change that is mostly visible in sunlight.

For those who are seeking a vibrant and colorful result from their hair color application, hair bleaching products are essential. Using bleach on hair will draw out the natural pigment and lighten its color, ready for a new shade. Light hair colors, such as the Manic Panic Creamtones or even the UV collection, will not appear clearly if applied to a base that is too dark.

Not only does bleaching your hair lighten it ready for a color application, but it also opens the pores in your hair so that the color can be more easily absorbed. Porous hair is a much better base for semi-permanent hair dye; low hair porosity will struggle to hold the pigment, meaning that it is likely the color will fade or run quicker.

The Flash Lightning® Bleach Kits are available in 30 and 40 volume. These products make effective hair bleach for dark hair as they can lift the color 3-4 levels. As is the case with most bleaching experiences, it is likely that if your hair is very dark, you might need to bleach your hair multiple times; we recommend waiting 2-3 days between bleaching sessions to give your hair a rest. During this time, apply a treatment and tend to your hair.

How To Use The Flash Lightning® Bleach Kits

Before applying any product to your hair and scalp, including bleach, a patch test should be carried out. To carry out the patch test, mix up a small amount of the bleach and apply the size of a 5 pence coin to an area of skin that can’t be easily interfered with. This should be done 24-48 hours before the main application of bleach, so that you can be made aware of any potential allergies or reactions.

If any allergies or reactions occur, do not continue using this product.

  • Place the gloves on to protect your skin from coming into contact with the bleaching formula.
  • Deposit the hair bleaching powder into the mixing tray with the Crème Developer and mix gently until fully combined and of a smooth consistency.
  • Using the tint brush, apply the bleach to the required areas of your hair. Avoid getting the mixture on your skin; if this occurs, ensure it is wiped off.
  • Once the hair is fully saturated, place the plastic cap on to keep the heat in. This assists the processing time and the development.
  • Check a strand every 10 minutes to ensure you do not overbleach.
  • Once the processing time is complete, rinse the hair with cool/warm water, shampoo and condition thoroughly.
